What is this?

It is a pure silk saree which is hand woven traditionally by the weaver in a small place called Kanchipuram  located in Tamilnadu, India. This place is also known for producing some finest silk in the world hence also known as a silk city.

Technically this sari fabric is generally hand woven with dyed silk yarn and has interleaved designs made with Zari. This Zari is made of three single threads of silk which is twisted with a thin silver wire and then gilded with pure gold

Its price ranges from INR 5,500 to INR 1,50,000 depending  upon the quality of material used like quality of silk,  zari (silver, gold, copper)  and the labor charges. It takes around 8 to 12 days to weave one saree.

Kanchi sarees usually come in bright or earthy colors such as scarlet, emerald green, black, ochre, purple, steel blue, peacock blue, turquoise and even in the traditional favorites of red and white.

Beside traditional color this Indian bridal wear is also available in some modern colors which make it more popular and in fashion .It is for sure a fashion fabric.

Do you know, according to Hindu mythology Kanchi silk weaver are descendants of Sage Markanda, the master weaver of Gods. Kanchivaram sarees are considered auspicious as lord Vishnu was very fond of this fabric.

  • In a genuine saree, the border, body and pallu are woven separately and then interlocked together. Joint are woven strongly and almost inseparable. This also account for its high price.
  • Traditional pyramidical temple borders, checks, stripes and floral "buttas" are the characteristic designs associated with a Kancheepuram Saree.  Fusion is available like you  can find Kalamkari, stone work and much more.
  • Look for Silk mark. It is an initiative of Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India. It denotes 100% pure silk.
  • Government of India has recently ease the norm and so forth silver content of 40% and gold content of 0.5% is permissible and still  be considered as Kanchipuram as far as the export is concern. Reason being a hike in price of gold and silver.
  • It is a delicate silk with gold and silver in it. Always always  dry clean this sari.

Silk is always considered as a ceremonial wear at religious rituals and weddings. Kancheepuram Sarees are also known as Kanchipuram, Kancheevaram and sometimes Kanchivaram Sarees as well.
